Hydroquinone is a topical medication used to lighten the skin and treat hyperpigmentation conditions: 

• Skin lighteningHydroquinone is used to treat areas of hyperpigmentation, such as freckles, sunspots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It can also be used as a pretreatment before chemical peels or fractional laser therapy. 
• Mechanism of actionHydroquinone works by inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme, which reduces the production of melanin pigment. 
• AvailabilityHydroquinone is available over-the-counter in a 2% topical formula and by prescription in a 4% formula. 

Here are some tips for using hydroquinone:

• ApplicationApply a small amount after cleansing and toning, but before moisturizer. Gently massage it in until it's absorbed. 
• Sun protectionWear sunscreen and protective clothing when using hydroquinone, as it can make skin more sensitive to the sun. 
• Side effectsCheck for side effects within 24 hours of applying a small amount to unbroken skin. If you experience itching, redness, puffiness, or blistering, stop using the product and contact your doctor. 
• DurationUse hydroquinone for up to four months, and then begin to taper off use. Don't use it for more than five months at a time. 
• Avoid lipsAvoid applying hydroquinone to your lips, as it can cause numbness or nerve damage.
